Koromatua School Multipurpose Hall
Client Koromatua School Board of Trustees
Project New Multipurpose Hall
Location Waikato
Completed 2012
As the existing hall at Koromatua School was too small to accommodate sporting activities, a new multipurpose hall was constructed at the front of the school. Due to this 'front of site' location the hall has been designed as the school's main feature building, giving the school a presence close to its' entrance.
The hall has a main mono pitch roof that houses the entrance and ancillary rooms at the lower end, and opens out onto the playing fields from the hall space at the high-pitch end. Exterior cladding is vertical corrugated zincalume, with the portal structures being expressed externally. The facade facing the road features a large, cantilevered, concrete tilt slab that accommodates the school's main signage.
Approached from the main access drive to the school, the building has a large glazed facade at the entrance that allows views into the main hall space and through to the playing fields. The hall space has a feature ceiling of perforated corrugated iron that contributes to the good acoustics in the room and also ties in with the external appearance of the building. Large windows and doors on the playing field side contribute to the openness of the space and allow natural light in and views out.
This multipurpose building also contains two small teaching spaces, ablutions, a large kitchen and storage rooms. An external servery to the kitchen allows it to be used as a canteen and during outdoor sports events.
To complete the project, the existing school hall was then converted into two large classrooms and two offices.
