Out of the Fog Cafe - Owhanga
Client
Project New café
Location Owhanga
Completed 2006
The brief was to create an eye-catching cafe that invited people to stop in, refresh themselves and enjoy the surroundings. Situated in a prominent location as you come into the small town of Owhango in the Ruapehu District, this small cafe building makes the most of its position to capture the mountain-bound travelers.
Adopting a simple form similar to many skiing huts, this black weatherboard building has the right character for its target clientele and fits in with the largely winter-oriented town activities.
Large windows facing north and towards the road, open up this otherwise intimate cafe and a generous fireplace creates a cosy atmosphere against the winter chill. A good commercial kitchen services the building which also has a large outdoor eating area for those stunning, sunny winter days.
